Apple has announced the HomePod mini 2, the next generation of its compact smart speaker, with a stronger focus on AI-powered voice assistance, improved music experiences, and connected-home control. The new model introduces Siri AI support, five color options, and a new surround-sound setup when paired with the latest Apple TV 4K.
The company says the updated speaker is designed to make everyday tasks easier through more natural voice interactions, personalized assistance, and smarter audio features. However, Siri AI will arrive through a future software update rather than being available immediately at launch.
Apple has opened pre-orders for the HomePod mini 2 in the United States and more than 23 other countries and regions. The speaker is priced at $149 in the US, with in-store availability scheduled to begin on October 30, 2026.

Siri AI Brings More Personalized Assistance
One of the biggest changes in the HomePod mini 2 is its planned integration with Siri AI. Built on Apple’s latest Foundation Models architecture, the upgraded assistant is designed to understand requests more naturally, use personal context, and provide more helpful responses.
When connected to an iPhone or iPad that supports Apple Intelligence, Siri AI will be able to assist with tasks involving information across supported apps. For example, users could ask Siri to find a song recommended by a friend in a message, locate a recipe received by email, or add ingredients to a shopping list.
The assistant is also designed to handle follow-up questions within a conversation and provide answers using up-to-date information from the web.
Apple says HomePod mini 2 can recognize up to six household members by voice, allowing it to offer a more personalized experience for different people in the same home.
Users without an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad will also be able to benefit from Siri AI’s broader knowledge and more conversational capabilities once the feature becomes available on a supported speaker.
Improved Audio and a New Home Theater Setup
The HomePod mini 2 continues to focus on delivering room-filling sound from a compact speaker. It supports standalone playback, stereo pairing, and multiroom audio, allowing users to listen to music in different parts of their homes.
The speaker uses Apple’s S10 chip and computational audio technology to optimize sound performance. According to Apple, the system analyzes audio in real time to adjust loudness, dynamic range, and acoustic output.
A notable addition is support for a four-speaker surround-sound experience when the HomePod mini 2 is paired with the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K. The system is designed to recognize the speakers’ positions in a room and automatically calibrate audio timing and levels.
This could make the HomePod mini 2 more appealing to users who want a more immersive home entertainment setup without investing in a traditional surround-sound system.
The speaker can also be used with a Mac for activities such as watching movies, playing games, and making FaceTime or other video calls.
Sound Glow Adds Visual Effects to Music
Apple is also introducing a feature called Sound Glow, which adds a visual element to music playback.
With this feature, the light on top of the HomePod mini 2 can glow and pulse in response to music, reacting to elements such as bass and treble. The lighting can also match the album artwork displayed in the Now Playing experience, creating a different visual effect for individual songs.
Users will also be able to select soundscapes, including rain, to create a more relaxing atmosphere.
The feature gives the compact speaker a more interactive appearance and adds another layer to the music-listening experience.
Smart Home Control Gets More Convenient
The HomePod mini 2 is designed to work as part of Apple’s connected-home ecosystem. Users can issue voice commands to control compatible accessories, adjust the thermostat, switch off lights, close blinds, or run multiple actions through smart-home automations.
Through Apple’s Home app, users can create scenes that control several accessories simultaneously. The speaker can also function as a home hub, enabling secure remote access to compatible devices through an iPhone.
Another useful feature is Sound Recognition. The speaker can listen for smoke or carbon monoxide alarms and send notifications to a user’s iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch if an alarm is detected.
Apple also says the device works with compatible smart-home cameras and video doorbells. Supported accessories can use Face Recognition features to announce who is at the door.
These capabilities position the HomePod mini 2 as more than a music speaker, particularly for households already using Apple’s smart-home products.
Apple Highlights Privacy and Security
Privacy remains an important part of Apple’s approach to its smart speakers. According to the company, Siri requests on the HomePod mini 2 can be processed on the device or through Private Cloud Compute, depending on the task.
Apple says data processed through Private Cloud Compute is not stored or made accessible to Apple or other parties. The system is intended to extend the privacy protections associated with on-device processing to supported cloud-based AI tasks.
The approach will be important as voice assistants become more capable and handle increasingly personal requests involving messages, reminders, and other information.
However, the practical experience will depend on the final software implementation and the availability of supported features in each region.
A More Environmentally Focused Design
Apple says the HomePod mini 2 continues its environmental efforts through the use of recycled materials. The speaker includes 100% recycled rare earth elements in its magnets, along with recycled copper, gold plating, and tin solder in Apple-designed printed circuit boards.
The company also says the product meets its energy-efficiency and chemical-safety standards. Its paper packaging is fiber-based and designed to be recyclable.
These measures form part of Apple’s wider goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its entire footprint by 2030.
HomePod mini 2 Price and Availability
Apple has announced the following launch details:
- Price: $149 in the United States.
- Colors: Pink, green, blue, white, and midnight.
- Pre-orders: Available from October 17, 2026, in the US and more than 23 other countries and regions.

Apple lists the United States, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the United Kingdom among the regions scheduled to receive Siri AI support on the HomePod mini 2.
The company has not specified an exact release date for the Siri AI software update in the announcement. Buyers should therefore distinguish between the speaker’s launch date and the later availability of its AI features.
What the Launch Means for Smart Speakers
The HomePod mini 2 reflects Apple’s effort to bring more advanced AI capabilities into everyday home devices. Rather than focusing only on music playback, the company is positioning the speaker as a voice-controlled assistant for entertainment, personal tasks, and smart-home management.
Its planned Siri AI integration could make the speaker more useful for people who already rely on Apple devices. The four-speaker surround-sound option may also appeal to users looking for a compact home theater setup.
The main question is how well the upgraded assistant performs once the software update arrives. Its usefulness will depend on conversational accuracy, app integration, regional availability, and how smoothly it handles everyday requests.
For now, the HomePod mini 2 combines updated audio features, new visual effects, and expanded smart-home capabilities in Apple’s familiar compact-speaker design. Its long-term appeal will depend on whether the promised AI improvements deliver a noticeably better experience than the existing model.
